LGBTQ+ Affirming Mental Health & Therapy Resources in San Francisco

Finding the right mental health support as an LGBTQ+ person — or as the parent of an LGBTQ+ child — can feel overwhelming. This page is a starting point: a curated collection of affirming resources in San Francisco and the broader Bay Area, from free peer support to professional therapy.

Why “Affirming” Matters

Not all therapists are equipped to support LGBTQ+ clients well. An affirming therapist doesn’t just tolerate LGBTQ+ identities — they understand them, work from a framework that doesn’t treat queerness or transness as problems to fix, and create a space where you don’t have to educate your provider before you can be helped.

For trans and nonbinary individuals especially, working with a provider who understands gender identity and gender dysphoria can make a profound difference in outcomes.

How to Find an LGBTQ+-Affirming Therapist in SF

Psychology Today — Use the filter “LGBTQ+” at psychologytoday.com/us/therapists to search by specialty, insurance, and sliding-scale availability in San Francisco.

Inclusive Therapists — A directory specifically designed to connect LGBTQ+ people, BIPOC individuals, and other marginalized communities with culturally responsive therapists. inclusivetherapists.com

GLMA (LGBTQ+ Medical Association) — A directory of LGBTQ+-affirming healthcare providers including mental health professionals. glma.org

Open Path Collective — Low-cost therapy (typically $30–$80/session) from therapists who identify as or are affirming of LGBTQ+ clients. openpathcollective.org

When contacting a new therapist, it’s okay to ask directly: “Do you have experience working with [trans clients / LGBTQ+ youth / families with LGBTQ+ members]?” A good fit will welcome the question.

Free & Low-Cost LGBTQ+ Mental Health Support in the Bay Area

PFLAG SF Monthly Support Group — Free peer support for families and individuals, every second Tuesday, 7–9 PM PT. This isn’t therapy, but many people find peer community one of the most valuable forms of support available. No cost, no appointment, no prior experience required. → Learn more and register

LYRIC — Drop-in support, case management, and mental health services for LGBTQ+ youth in San Francisco. Free and low-cost options available. lyric.org

SF LGBT Center — Community programs, referrals, and support services for LGBTQ+ adults in San Francisco. sfcenter.org

For Parents: Your Mental Health Matters Too

If you’re a parent navigating a child’s coming out, a trans identity, or questions about gender-affirming care, the emotional weight is real. Fear, grief, confusion, and love can exist at the same time — and you deserve support through it.

PFLAG San Francisco’s support group is specifically designed for this. It’s not therapy, but it’s a community of parents who have been exactly where you are — many of whom now describe it as the most important thing they did during a difficult time.
